Project Specifications
A community center in Montreal had spent 2 years working with the local artists to create a wood panel mural depicting the history of the neighborhood. Once complete, a city engineer and project manager who knew the advantages of aluminum turned to us for help. Together we came up with a solution for displaying the important artwork outdoors, without having it destroyed by rain, snow, and extreme temperatures. High-definition photographs of each of the 13 wood panels were printed in large format on graphic film with pressure-sensitive adhesive backing. The film was applied to 13 panels of 5052 aluminum alloy plates. The aluminum panels were then attached to each other, so that they move together on the structure when they expand and contract. The panels were also riveted to the aluminum support structure in a floating arrangement that accommodates the dimensional changes the seasons bring. Finally, to maintain a seamless appearance, vertical supporting posts were installed to make panels level on all three axes.
